The primary reason to consider booking an ocean view cabin is if you are set on having an exterior view but do not want to pay for a balcony. Some ships, such as Norwegian Pearl, have obstructed ocean view rooms. These can sleep up to four guests and have either a picture window or porthole with an obstructed view, meaning that you will not get a clear view of the ocean. If you aren't spending much time in the room, it probably won't matter if you have less space and no balcony. You can still see the sunset or watch the ship pulling into port by heading upstairs and taking in the views from the pool deck. Save the extra money to splurge on dinner and a bottle of wine at the steakhouse or a tour in port.

To book, simply look for "Sail Away" under "Stateroom Options" for your cruise. Several recent Norwegian vessels have some quite large ocean-view cabins at their fronts that measure from 240 to 372 square feet. Dubbed Family Oceanview Stateroom with Large Picture Window, they are designed to hold up to five people and are marketed to families. In most cases, these studio cabins have windows that face an interior hallway, though some solo cabins have windows and balconies.

The takeaway here is that you'll have a tougher time locking down a suite on an older Norwegian ship than on a newer vessel. If you're planning a cruise on one of the line's older vessels and a suite is a must, you'll want to book early to make sure you get one. On some of Norwegian's largest ships, including Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, there are a whopping 39 different types of cabins — each a little different from the last.

Most inside cabins on the ship used in the examples above, Norwegian Encore, measure just 149 square feet. That's about 7% smaller than the typical ocean-view cabin on the vessel, which measures 160 square feet. The typical balcony cabin on Norwegian Encore is 175 square feet, not including a 30- to 110-square-foot balcony. For quite some time NCL has not offered any freestyle perks on the lowest guarantee X category for inside, oceanview, balcony or mini suite categories. For example, our inside cabin on Norwegian Sun had a small loveseat that we could use for seating. This meant that we did not need to sit on our beds while in the cabin since we had additional seating.
I sometimes get seasick, but I luckily didn't feel any nausea on this cruise. Other inside rooms have more space with things like a single pull-out couch for larger groups, particuarly families. While I now have the means to splurge on hotels when I want, I still stay in hostels at some point during my yearly travels and am used to managing with just a bunk bed and a shared bathroom. I paid another $200 for taxes, fees, and port expenses on top of the $300 inside cabin fare, which was the cheapest on this sailing.
As someone who regularly saves money by staying in hostels on trips, I'm used to making do with cramped spaces.

Of course, I had entirely different expectations when boarding Norwegian Viva. As the latest ship to debut for the cruise line, I knew our cabin would have a more modern design. I was eager to compare this inside cabin to our experience on Norwegian Sun. This time, I would be cruising with two other guests, meaning we'd have to utilize the pullman bed.
Imagine the view with a nice cocktail in hand as the sun begins to set. Think spacious accommodations with ocean views, some even come with a hot tub on your balcony. You see, this is not just any cruise experience, it’s your key to receiving the best that Norwegian Cruise Line has to offer in its “ship within a ship” suite enclave. To say that The Haven is “drop dead gorgeous” is an understatement. I’ve experienced a lot of “wow” factor areas on cruise ships, but this one really made me step back and take it all in. “Once you’ve experienced The Haven, there is NO going back.” Those were the words of a friend I was chatting to in the District Brewhouse onboard Norwegian Joy.
The room was perfect because it only had to accommodate me — two people would be too tight a squeeze.

The Haven accounts more than 100 of the 1,600 cabins, around 6% of occupancy, and Sommer estimated that The Haven accounts for at least 3% of the cabins across its fleet so far. Here’s how one of the oldest and cheapest inside cabins in Norwegian’s fleet compares to the newest inside cabin on Norwegian Viva.

With an ocean-view cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Within each of the four broad categories of cabins on Norwegian ships, you'll find multiple subcategories. I first noticed this change in name yesterday - it's on all cabin classes except suites. I have seen NCL cruises through travel agents use the very similarly worded "Sail Away Rate" which was without promos but usually still offered a cabin choice. When you sail with Norwegian Cruise Line, you are cruising on the most innovative and accommodating fleet on the high seas. Our award-winning fleet was built for Freestyle, designed to give you freedom and flexibility.
Choose your ship, choose your destination and step on board for the perfect vacation. Completed this year, NCL’s newest ship, the Prima, measures 965 feet (294 meters) from aft to forward, hosting over 3,100 guests at double occupancy with more than 1,500 crew members. The first of a new class of six ships from NCL set to roll out from 2022 to 2027, NCL touts the Prima as pushing the boundaries on cruise design, service, and sustainability. I’ve never had an issue sailing in an inside cabin, and these cruises with Norwegian Cruise Line were no exception. Interior staterooms have everything I need for a comfortable stay, even without the frills of a higher-end cabin. When we boarded this ship in Spain, I was surprised to see the condition of our inside cabin - in a good way!

I booked it back in January and was looking at the new England just a few weeks ago. “But we absolutely plan to keep to that and work towards it,” Sommer said. He identified two “promising” areas that NCL is looking at to make this happen.
I wouldn’t hesitate to book another inside cabin with Norwegian Cruise Line. The first closet was exposed, followed by two more standard closets. Inside the closets, guests could also use pull-out baskets for additional space.
